DUES

How much are union dues?

According to UNITE HERE Local 26 2024 LM2 report, members were charged between $13.06 - $21.60 per week as base union dues. Additionally, members were charged $5 per event in working dues. The more money you make, the more money you pay to the union in dues.  Does that mean people who pay more get more attention or better representation from the union?

In 2024, UNITE HERE Local 26 collected an average of $680 - $1,124 from its members in base annual dues. This does not include any fines, fees, or assessments. And remember, unions are permitted and often do increase the amount of dues members are required to pay.

What if I don’t want to join the union or pay dues?

Under Massachusetts law, you are not required to join the union as a member, but you likely would be required to pay a large portion of the dues called “agency fees”. If the union does win, opting out may not be in your best interest because the terms of any contract negotiated apply to you, and you do not get to vote on the ratification of the contract.

How does the union collect union dues?

Typically, union dues are deducted automatically from your paycheck each week. The amount and rules for dues are set by the union as part of its internal business.

Can UNITE HERE increase dues?

Yes. Unions are free to raise dues any time they want.  According to the UNITE HERE constitution, locals are permitted to establish dues in a greater amount than what is listed constitution.

Wouldn't we control how our dues are spent?

No. All spending decisions are made by UNITE HERE to support the union's overall operations. All unions are required to report their receipts and disbursements in an annual report with the Department of Labor.

Can the union collect other monies besides dues?

Yes, the Union can also charge initiation fees and other fines, fees and assessments, such as a fine for crossing an established picket line. According to UNITE HERE constitution, each new member will pay an initiation fee.  Art. 17 Sec. 2. Additionally, the UNITE HERE Local 26 2024 LM2 report states that initiation fees ranged from 40 – 100 per member.
